Vernon M. Whitaker, 91, of Hopedale, IL, formerly of Mackinaw, died Saturday January 28, 2012 at his son’s home surrounded by his family.
Vernon was born October 3, 1920 in Cool Springs, KY, to Van Buren and Geneva Leach Whitaker. He married Margarette C. Flener in Island, KY, July 26, 1941. She preceded him in death February 11, 2011. Also preceding Vernon in death were his parents, one son, Glenn Whitaker, two brothers, Henry and Donald Whitaker, two sisters, Alberta Daugherty, Rachel Ulrich.

Vernon is survived by three sons, Delton (Nancy C.) Whitaker of Morton, Dale (Mary) Whitaker of Mackinaw, Kevin (Tracey) Whitaker of Hopedale, one daughter-in-law, Nancy A. Whitaker of Minier, one brother, Ralph Whitaker of Madisonville, KY, one sister, Verna (Dale) Schumacker of Cleveland, Ohio, nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, four step great-grandchildren.
Vernon worked at Caterpillar Tractor Co. 30 yr. retiring in 1977. During that time he owned and operated Whitaker TV & Appliance in Mackinaw. Upon his retirement he worked for Bell Enterprises in Mackinaw at the grain elevator.
Graveside services will be 10:00 AM Thursday February 2, 2012 at Mackinaw Township Cemetery. The Rev. Josh Beutow will officiate. Visitation will be 5-7 PM Wednesday February 1, at Haensel Funeral Home in Mackinaw.
Memorials may be made to Mackinaw Rescue Squad, Minier Rescue Squad, or Hopedale Medical Complex building fund.
